Men’s Swimming and Diving Finishes Regular Season With Loss to Stevens

HOBOKEN, NJ – The Hartwick men's swimming and diving team could not close their regular season with a win on Saturday at former Empire 8 foe Stevens, falling to the Ducks, 104.5-156.5. The Hawks finish the regular season at 10-4, their 12th consecutive year above .500.

Four 'Wick swimmers had wins on the day. Brennan Walsh (Westerville, OH/New Albany Plains) was first in the 100 back at 55.58 seconds, while Diallo Marshall (Saint George, Antigua & Barbuda/St. Anthony's) took the 50 free with a time of 21.67 seconds later on. 

Yury Chernyak's (Sidney, NY/Sidney) gold in the 200 breast (2:09.61) was his best finish of the day, but he also was second in the 100 breast at 59.28 seconds (and followed .71 seconds behind by Ryan McLoughlin (New Windsor, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) at 59.99 seconds). Dawson Tupponce (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) had Hartwick's final win, tying for first with a Duck in the 100 fly at 54.32 seconds.

Other notable individual Hartwick finishes include:

  • Javonte Herbert (Houston, TX/Cy Springs) at second place in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.49;
  • Nic Canney (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol) claiming second in the 500 free at 4:58.30;
  • Isaac Waide (East Haddam, CT/Nathan Hale-Ray beating out Canney by .10 seconds for second in the long-distance 1000 free, at 10:18.35;
  • and Colin Leonard's (Slingerlands, NY/Bethlehem) third-place finish in the 200 fly at 2:02.68, just .09 seconds behind silver.

In the day's final race, a team of Marshall, Zach Skelton (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), Reid Sinkinson (Telford, PA/Souderton Area), and McLoughlin picked up second in the 200 free relay by clocking in at 1:28.96.

The Hawks are off from competition now until Wednesday, February 19, when they participate in the opening day of the first Allegheny Empire Championship. The event combines the schools of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate and Empire 8 Conferences, and will run through Saturday, February 22.
