ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick tennis team picked up their third consecutive win on Friday evening, downing visiting Russell Sage by an 8-0 scoreline. The victory bumps the Hawks record up to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the Empire 8, which puts them second in the conference. The Gators are now 0-8 for the year and 0-4 in conference.
The Hawks set the tone during doubles, swiping all three points. Top pairing Victoria Wilson (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic Academy) and Jade Killikelly (Jamaica, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) outlasted Russell Sage's Maddie Cherry and Taylor Gillespie in their matchup, winning 8-7 with a 7-0 tiebreak. Ryann Ashby (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) and Val Kohberger (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) cruised by at second doubles, winning 8-1, and Colleen Marsh (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) and Jess Sexton (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) chomped through their Gator opponents, 8-0.
'Wick kept it rolling for the entirety of singles, which rolled right until sundown. Ashby picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at #2 singles, Wilson 6-0, 6-1 at #3 singles, and Kohberger 6-1, 6-1 at #4 singles. Sexton (6-0, 6-2) and Marsh (6-0, 6-0) rounded out the scoring for the evening with wins at #5 and #6, respectively. The only Hawk not to score at singles was Killikelly, whose match was stopped due to darkness after two sets at 2-6, 7-6 (4).
The Hawks are back to it tomorrow afternoon, as they host Alfred at 2:30 p.m. in Wilber Park for their final home match. Seniors Wilson and Jessica Best (Niskayuna, NY/Colonie) will be honored before the match for their contributions to the program.
