ONEONTA, NY – A 70th minute goal earned visiting Skidmore a well-deserved road victory on Wednesday night, as they outshot the Hartwick women's soccer team 21-3 in a 1-0 victory. The loss drops the Hawks to 3-2-3 on the season, while the Thoroughbreds are now 5-3-1.
The game started out quietly with not many chances for either side through the first 25 minutes. The Hawks had the best of those opportunities, despite not scoring. In the fifth minute, Lexie Thompson (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna) played Gianna Cacciola (Wading River, NY/Shoreham Wading River) through into the left side of the box, and her left-footed cross was taken on the volley by Hannah Bochniak (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) but sent right at Skidmore keeper Ava Keller.
About 11 minutes later, a Nicole Casab (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) corner was cleared out but eventually came back to her for another cross in the box. Cacciola's head nearly found the ball, but Keller was able to punch it towards the top of the box before anything dangerous could happen. There was a controversial non-call on the ensuing battle, as Madi McGuire (Goshen, NY/Goshen) was taken down inside the box but did not earn a penalty in the eyes of the referee. The last of 'Wick's chances in the opening portion of the game came in the 25th minute, as a beautiful Kayla Grassi (Montgomery, NY/Pine Bush) touch set off some nice Hartwick passing that ended with Casab's ploy at net from about 25 yards out floating just high.
Skidmore got in on the action in the 30th minute, as Ella Stone played Isabelle Sullivan through the Hartwick back line. Sullivan cut back and shot one left-footed that ultimately rolled harmlessly wide. About eight minutes later, Kyra Russman-Araya had a free header on a cross into the box that she tried and failed to redirect to the left post, pushing it wide. The final significant chance of the half came in the 44th minute, when Abigail McCleary's (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury) cross narrowly slipped by a wide open Casey Shein (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) in front of the goal. The game remained scoreless at the half.
Play was much more free in the opening minutes of the second half, although neither side had a dangerous chance in the first five minutes. From there, though, the visitors would dominate the remainder of the game, eventually outshooting the Hawks 16 to 1 over the final 45 minutes.
After Sullivan's close-range shot was deflected high for a corner in the 53rd minute, Hartwick cleared out the ensuing ball. It was controlled by Vanessa Eljaiek, however, and her effort required an excellent diving save from Sara Staup (Woodinville, WA/Woodinville). It seemed as if the Thoroughbreds had broken through over five minutes later after Melissa Haas's corner deflected straight in, but the linesman determined that the outswinging ball had completely crossed over the end line for a goal kick. Stone had a great effort in the 62nd minute from the left side of the top of the box, hitting one to the far post that got past a diving Staup but dipped just wide.
Skidmore finally broke through in the 70th minute on a tally by Olivia Allen. The Thoroughbreds initiated play from deep in their own end, and Stone eventually found herself with the ball near midfield. She took a few strides and sent one wide for a streaking Paige Karl who in turn would play a cross into the box. The ball was parried away by Staup but found by Allen, who slid one easily into the vacated net for the lead.
The visitors nearly extended the lead to two in the 74th minute, but were again denied by Staup. She first raced out to the top of her box to prevent Lauren Winkler from having a clean look at net all alone, and then made a nifty save on the follow-up shot from Stone. Towards the end of the game, the Thoroughbreds did a good job playing keepaway from the Hawks, maintaining possession mostly in the Hartwick defensive half. The Hawks did make a couple pushes for an equalizer late on but could not register another shot before the final horn rang.
Staup was impressive in net all evening, making a career-high nine saves throughout the 90 minutes.
'Wick returns to conference play this Saturday, as they host Houghton for a 2 p.m. game on the Elmore grass.
