UTICA, NY – The Hartwick tennis team swept through Utica on the road Saturday, securing a 9-0 win over the Pioneers in the Hawks' final regular season match of the fall. 'Wick is now 8-2 overall and finishes 5-1 in the Empire 8, the best winning percentage in conference play in program history. Utica is now 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the Empire 8.
Victoria Wilson (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic Academy) and Jade Killikelly (Jamaica, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) did what they do best at top doubles, dispatching Morgan Willis and Bianca Bockhaus in an 8-1 decision. Ryann Ashby (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) and Val Kohberger (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) picked up an 8-0 sweep at second doubles, and the hosts forfeited the third doubles matchup to give Hartwick all available doubles points.
Killikelly secured a 6-1, 6-1 win at top singles against Willis, while Ashby moved past Bockhaus in a 6-0, 6-1 decision at second singles. Wilson won 6-1, 6-2 at #3, Kohberger had a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth singles, and Colleen Marsh (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 victory at fifth singles. The Pioneers were forced to forfeit the final singles matchup of the day.
'Wick now looks ahead to the Empire 8 Tournament, where they will be the #2 seed for the first time in program history. The Hawks will take on third-seeded St. John Fisher on the campus of Houghton College at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 15.
