KEUKA PARK, NY – Looking for their first win of the season, the Hartwick women's lacrosse team wasted no time grabbing the lead under a minute into the game on Saturday, eventually defeating Keuka 19-7 on the road. The win bumps the Hawks to 1-2 on the season, while the Wolves are now 0-3.
Only 43 seconds in, GinaMarie Wilson (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) got 'Wick on the board with her fifth tally of the season. Claudia Pollaro (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) followed next at 28:48 with her first collegiate goal, and Ellie Masterpole (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) got on the board 3:13 in to make it 3-0. Alexa Matarazzo (Commack, NY/Commack) picked up the next two goals before Keuka finally got on the board at 21:09.
Rachel Hedden (Burlington, CT/Central Conn. State) got the Hawks back on track with an unassisted tally at 20:24, making it 6-1. Daisy Humsey (Pawcatuck, CT/Hyde School) and Wilson tallied 34 seconds apart at 18:57 and 18:23 for a seven-goal lead; it was the first goal of Humsey's Hartwick career. The Hawks outscored the Wolves 5-2 over the rest of the half, including another Matarazzo tally for the hat trick to make it 13-3 at the break.
It was a bit of a closer game in the second half, as Hartwick outscored their hosts just 6-4 over the final thirty minutes. Keuka's Sydney Carr made it a 13-4 game 72 seconds into the period, although Wilson assisted an Amy Tracy (Smithtown, NY/Florida Southern College) goal just over a minute later. Keuka's Madeline Greene and Emily Schaub (Brewster, NY/Brewster) alternated the next four scores as the scoreboard read 16-6 with 11:14 remaining.
Continuing the game's trend, the Hawks outscored the Wolves 3-1 over the final portion of the game. Hedden and Wilson both scored their second of the season under two minutes apart before Sydney Bloom got Keuka's seventh with 2:43 remaining. Tracy assisted on the game's final goal, Cassie Durkin's (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville) first of the season with two seconds to go.
On the day, Wilson was the Hawks' points leader with five. She had a hat trick and an assist, as well as team highs with five ground balls and four caused turnovers (and two draw controls). Tracy had four points on two goals on five shots and two assists, plus two ground balls scooped. Hedden, Matarazzo, and Humsey each contributed three points; the former two had a trick while Humsey had two tallies and a helper. Hedden also had three draw controls, two caused turnovers, and two ground balls, Matarazzo picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers, and Humsey had two caused turnovers and one ground ball scooped. Jennifer Paszko (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had 11 saves on 18 shots for the win.
Hartwick had the better of play in just about every team statistical category. They had 36 shots to Keuka's 22, as well as just 16 turnovers against their host's 27. 'Wick was 19-of-23 on clear attempts to Keuka's 10-of-21, and scooped 29 ground balls versus the Wolves' 22. Keuka did have the advantage in draw controls however, at 17-10.
Even with the 12-point loss, Keuka had three players with multiple points. Greene had three goals on five shots, four draw controls and two ground balls. Sadie Bonetti had two goals, and Bloom had a goal on four shots, an assist, a game-high nine draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Emily Johnson played the first 12:42 in net for the Wolves, giving up nine goals on 11 shots, and then Victoria Castiglia played the final 47:18 and gave up 10 tallies on 20 attempts on net.
Next up for 'Wick is #12 St. John Fisher next Saturday, as they host the Cardinals for a game beginning on the Wright Stadium turf at 1 p.m.
