Zona Equalizes Late in Men’s Soccer’s Draw With Clarkson

ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick men's soccer team earned a draw on Jake Zona's (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) late tying goal on Sunday, ending level with Clarkson at 1-1 after two overtimes on the second day of the Mayor's Cup. The tie gave the Hawks four points for the tournament, leaving them alone in second place behind champion SUNY Oneonta. 'Wick is now 3-1-1 on the season, while Clarkson is 0-3-2.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, with the Golden Knights outshooting the Hawks 4-2.

Clarkson finally broke the ice in the 51st minute. An entry ball was blocked by a Hartwick defender, but was fumbled around a bit before landing at the feet of Paolo Martino for the open net goal.

It seemed as if that would be the difference in the game, but a last-second corner saved the day for the home side. Jimmy Noel (Cap Haitian, Haiti) boomed a ball to the far post, where Zona's head found and redirected it inside the near post for the 90th minute equalizer.

The Hawks had a couple good chances to win in the overtime periods, including a frantic 30 seconds or so near the end of the second extra period, but ultimately had to be satisfied with a draw.

Zona tied for the match high with three shots, while Peter Crawford (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) was the only other Hawk with multiple shots at two. Jodi Johnson (Seaford, DE/Sussex Technical) played all 110 minutes in net, making three saves.

Johnson, Zona, and Jim Mahony (Bournemouth, England/Bournemouth Collegiate) were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances over the last two days.

Shots for the game were nearly even, as the Hawks outchanced Clarkson just 9 to 8 (5 to 4 in shots on goal). Hartwick did have a more significant lead in corner kicks, at 8 to 4.

'Wick returns to play this coming Saturday, September 18, as they host Keuka at 2 p.m. in their Empire 8 opener.
