Volleyball Splits at Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, NY – The Hartwick volleyball team won one and lost one at SUNY Morrisville this evening, first dropping a close 3-1 decision to the host Mustangs and then sweeping Oswego State on neutral ground in the night's final match. The day's action moves the Hawks' record to 2-1 on the year.

Match One vs. Morrisville (1-3; 25-17, 23-25, 23-25, 26-24)

  • The Hawks nabbed the first set by eight points before taking two-point losses in the next three sets.
  • They raced out to a 12-7 lead in the first set, fended off a couple Mustang comeback efforts, and ended on a 7-1 run for the win.
  • The second set saw impressive comeback efforts from both teams, including one by 'Wick to narrow a 23-17 lead to 24-23 before succumbing.
  • The Hawks led for the first portion of the third set, but their hosts then took a 12-10 lead and set into effect a back-and-forth battle that paused with both teams tied at 23. The Mustangs won the next two points, however; the first was on an Emily Huppee kill and the second on a Huppee ace.
  • The fourth and final set was close to begin with before the Hawks seemed to pull away with a 20-13 lead. Morrisville rang off a 7-1 run from there, though, and with the set later tied at 24-all put the match on ice with the final two points.
  • Staecia Silofau (Kapolei, HI/Maryknoll) led the way with 14 kills for 'Wick, with Toria Betelak (North Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) the only other Hawk in double digits at 10 kills
  • Colette Maloney (Williston Park, NY/Mineola) put up 11 digs and six kills, while Kailee Muscarello (Sayville, NY/Sayville) had 10 digs.
  • Kayley Ericson (Franklin, CT/Norwich Free Academy) had 21 assists.

Match Two vs. Oswego (3-0; 25-21, 25-16, 25-22)

  • The Hawks took control of the first set early on and never looked back, leading by enough to withstand a pair of 5-0 Laker runs.

  • The second stanza was closer to begin with but ended on a much more dominant note for 'Wick, as they closed out the set on a 14-6 run.Hartwick led once again early on in the third set, but this time Oswego was able to battle all the way back and eventually take a 20-19 lead.
  • The two sides eventually found themselves knotted at 22 before a Silofau kill, Sarah Petz (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) ace, and Myla Dobson (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) kill ended the match in that order.
  • Maloney had a solid all-around match, putting up nine kills, 14 digs, and three aces.
  • Silofau led all players with 14 kills, also chipping in five digs and three blocks as well.
  • Betelak had a match-high seven blocks, with Dobson contributing four of her own.
  • Braelyn Hornick (Candor, NY/Candor) took over setting duties for the nightcap, dishing out 27 assists as well as picking up eight digs.

The Hawks get back to it on Wednesday when they host West Street rival SUNY Oneonta in Lambros Arena for a 5 p.m. match.
