WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks opened the scoring in the Empire 8 semifinal quickly, scoring just 51 seconds into the contest.
  • Makenzie Kensel (San Diego, Calif.) took a pass from Julie Ruzzi (High Falls, N.Y.) after she entered the circle and was able to center a pass to the waiting stick of Holly Calore (Rocky Point, N.Y.) for the tip in score by the left post.
  • Despite remaining in control offensively, the Hawks could not get on the board until the 11th minute of play when Ruzzi found the back of the cage with a bullet from the top of the circle off of a corner insert.  Sami Shortino (Webster, N.Y.) was credited with the assist.
  • The Highlanders came right back at the Hawks in the 2nd quarter as Jace Hunzinger broke through the Hartwick's defensive line for a breakaway goal to get within one.
  • Houghton continued to put pressure on the Hawks throughout the remainder of the half, outshooting the Hawks 3-2 and taking an advantage on penalty corner, 2-1.
  • Up just 2-1, Hartwick came out of the break looking to dominate, picking up four penalty corners.
  • The Hawks cashed in on the fourth, with Shortino tallying the team's third goal of the game off of a pass from Ruzzi in the 44th minute of play.
  • Hartwick stepped up in the 4th quarter, thwarting any attempt by the Highlanders to switch the momentum in their half, holding on to win 3-1.
