Women’s Tennis Tops Cortland in Final Prep before the NCAA Tourney

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hartwick Women's Tennis team defeated the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon in their final prep before the NCAA Tournament.  The victory also set a new regular season win mark for the program.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 
  • Hartwick came out strong once again, taking all three doubles matches to give themselves the early 3-0 lead over the Red Dragons.
  • Damita Bollers (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Jade Killikelly (Jamaica, N.Y.) were the first to finish, defeating their first doubles opponents 8-2.
  • The second doubles tandem of Ryann Ashby (Malta, N.Y.) and Phoebe Olson (Jamestown, N. Dak.) followed suit, picking up a tightly contested match, 8-6.
  • Lily Vanuga (Springville, N.Y.) and Maggie Van Valkenburgh (Highland, N.Y.) wrapped up the doubles round with an 8-5 victory at third doubles.
  • The Hawks struggled to find their footing in the singles round, as all but one court found themselves down early.
  • However, after battling through a tight first set, Olson came away with a 6-4, 6-0 win at first singles to give Hartwick the 4-0 lead.
  • Colleen Marsh (Marcellus, N.Y.) put the Hawks at the magic number of five match wins, picking up the victory at fifth singles 6-3, 6-1.
  • Despite falling 3-6 in her first set, Bollers battled back to win the second set and then the tie breaker at third singles to cap off the 6-3 win for Hartwick.
 
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
 
The Hawks received an automatic bid into the 2023 Division III NCAA Women's Tennis tournament after claiming their first Empire 8 title in October.  The selection show will take place on Monday, May 1 with a time to be determined.  You can watch the selection show live on www.ncaa.com.
