Hawks Soar Over Sage in Empire 8 Semifinals

TROY, N.Y. – The Hawks picked up two doubles wins and three singles wins on Friday afternoon to defeat the Russell Sage Gators 5-1 in the first of two Empire 8 Semifinal matches.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 
  • The 3rd doubles squad of Lily Vanuga (Springville, N.Y.) and Samantha Lantzy (Valatie, N.Y.) were the first off the court with an easy 8-0 win.
  • Alexandra Krasinska (Pine Island, N.Y.) and Phoebe Olson (Jamestown, N. Dak.) were also dominant at 1st doubles taking their match 8-4.
  • At 2nd doubles, Gianna Leggieri (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and Ryann Ashby (Malta, N.Y.) found themselves in a battle, rallying back from three games down to eventually knot the score at 7-7.
  • Unfortunately, the duo fell in the tie break 8-6.
  • Up 2-1 headed into the singles round, the Hawks picked up a big win at 4th singles from Vanuga, who took care of her Sage counterpart with a straight set 6-0, 6-3 win.
  • Leggieri rebounded from her doubles loss to put Hartwick up 4-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
  • Lantzy turned in the match clinching win, winning at 3rd singles 6-0, 6-3.
 
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
 
The Hawks return to RPI tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM in the Empire 8 Championship match where they will square off against either SUNY Geneseo or Nazareth University.
