Field Hockey Soars in 5-1 Senior Day Win Over St. John Fisher

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Hawks conclude their final home game of the regular season with an impressive Senior Day win over the St. John Fisher Cardinals after honoring their seniors– Erica Leeson (Auburn, N.Y.), Zoe Wagner (Lockport, N.Y.), Caroline Aspuru (Farmingville, N.Y.), and manager Amanda Klopper (Randolph, N.J.).

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Hartwick was relentless on offense, tallying up 15 shots on goal off of 21 total shots. Senior Caroline Aspuru (Farmingville, N.Y.) and junior Katelyn Klotz (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) would each take 3 shots on goal apiece.

  • Kayla Kinkel (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the Hawks in scoring, earning herself a brace for the day alongside an assist on a goal by Klotz. Kendal Wooley (Blue Point, N.Y.) and Aspuru would each also come away from the game with a goal under their belts.

  • St. John Fisher would lead with 10 saves, although Ava Reynolds was a shining spot for the Hawks with 2 saves off of 8 shots. Mackenzie Hubbard (High Falls, N.Y.) would also be credited with a defensive save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a nice Senior Day ceremony within the starting lineups, the Hawks came out of the gate early to tally up five shots off of five different Hartwick players while Reynolds in goal would turn away the Cardinals' lone shot of the quarter.

Kayla Kinkel would get the first goal on the board for the Hawks about halfway into the second quarter when the St. John Fisher goalie would mistakenly redirect a shot from Kinkel into the left corner of the cage. While the second quarter saw momentum pick up for the Cardinals as their shot total increased, the Hawks kept their lead until the third quarter where– despite an impressive defensive save by Hubbard– the Cardinals would find the back of the cage to knot the game. However, Wooley would answer back swiftly with a goal of her own– more specifically her third in three games– off a deflection to bring the Hawks back in the lead.

By the fourth quarter, the Hawks were determined to win for their seniors above all else, as a penalty corner early on gave Klotz the perfect opportunity to lift a pass from Kinkel up and over the keeper to bring their lead to 3-1. However, the Hawks weren't done yet; Aspuru tacked another goal on the board for the Royal Blue and White a little over a minute later off of her own redirected cross.

Kinkel soon after would earn her second goal of the night by sending a rocket of a shot past the goalie into the right corner. Reynolds in cage would also tally her second save of the night off a penalty corner shot in the final five minutes to keep the Cardinals at another scoreless quarter and help the Hawks secure a massive 5-1 Senior Day win.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will look to continue their conference success as they hit the road to take on the Utica University Pioneers on Wednesday, October 22nd at 4 PM.
