Women's Soccer Falls to St. John Fisher

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Hawks were dealt a tough 0-3 loss by the St. John Fisher University Cardinals this afternoon despite immense effort.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: St. John Fisher 3 Hartwick 0

  • Location: Oneonta, N.Y. | Elmore Field

  • Records: St. John Fisher (8-4-2, 7-1-1 Empire 8) Hartwick (7-3-5, 4-2-3 Empire 8)

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Cardinals were dominant on offense, outshooting the Hawks 15-4 while still holding down defense to hold Hartwick to a shutout game– their 8th shutout of the season.

  • Despite the setback, Mikayla Piersa (Huntington, N.Y.) in goal would record 7 total saves, 5 of which were in the first half alone. The St. John Fisher goalkeeper would snag 2 saves in comparison.

  • Jenna Mierek (Prospect, Conn.) would lead the Hawks in shots with 2, while Nelle Slavitsky (Conklin, N.Y.) and Addyson Galuski (Waterford, N.Y.) would snag a shot a piece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

St. John Fisher was dominant on the pitch this afternoon, with the Cardinals tallying up several shots and Piersa making 4 nice saves for the Hawks within the first seventeen minutes of the match. Slavitsky would take the first shot for the Hawks in an effort to combat the Cardinals' attack, but the first goal instead would come from St. John Fisher in the 34th minute to bring them to a 1-0 lead. With less than four minutes left in the first half, it would be Galuski to make another attempt on the attack, but she would unfortunately be shut out by the keeper.

The second half only gave the Cardinals more momentum as they scored another goal nearly eight minutes in. The Royal Blue and White fought back hard in the midfield, but a St. John Fisher breakaway soon led to another goal to widen their lead to 3-0. Senior captain Jenna Mierek was determined, trying for two shots that just barely missed the goal in the final seven minutes, but it would not be enough to take down their conference foe.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH BRIAN KNAPP

"Obviously not the result we would have liked, but I'm happy with our fight again until the end. A couple of tough bounces going differently and it's a slightly different game. I'm just proud of the class and integrity our group showed throughout the game on and off the field. We'll regroup like we have after any tough result and come back even more motivated for Alfred next weekend."

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will take on the Utica University Pioneers on the road on Wednesday, October 22nd with a kickoff slated for 4 PM.
