HOW IT HAPPENED

Hartwick came out of the gate hot to establish dominance in their first ever field hockey game against Alfred University, dominating possession throughout the first half. Dani Hand (Queensbury, N.Y.) would get the Hawks on the board first, sending a high shot past the goalkeeper's head in the ninth minute of play. Klotz would strike not long after to grab two goals within a minute of each other, with Kayla Kinkel (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) also tacking on an assist. The Royal Blue and White would compile an impressive twenty-two shots in the first fifteen minutes alone while holding the Saxons to no attempts. Brianna Cottrell (Holland, N.Y.) would close out the first period for the Hawks with a stellar goal off a penalty stroke opportunity, giving the Hawks a 4-0 edge going into the second quarter.

The Hawks wouldn't give the Saxons any breathing room in the second quarter as they intercepted shots and kept possession on Alfred's side of the field throughout nearly the entirety of the quarter. Angioletti and Hubbard would soon combine for a nice goal in the twenty-fifth minute, followed by an Erica Leeson (Auburn, N.Y.) goal off a pass from Zoe Wagner (Lockport, N.Y.) to close out the half.

The pace slowed down in the second half, but Natalie O'Malley (Pleasantville, N.Y.) would successfully sneak a shot past the Saxons' defensive unit to bring the Hawks up to a 7-goal lead in the third quarter. Only three minutes later, Kinkel would show off some agility by navigating through defenders and burying a goal of her own. The final fifteen minutes passed quickly, but not before Wagner added a goal to her stat sheet as Hubbard tallied another assist for the day. The Hawks would end the game with a big 9-0 triumph; On the other end, Hawks' defense stood tall and held the Saxons to zero shot attempts and zero penalty corners throughout the entirety of the game.
