Women's Volleyball Soars for a 3-1 Conference Win Over Wildcats

UTICA, N.Y. - The Hawks snag their second conference win against the SUNY Poly Wildcats on a late Friday night conference showdown.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: SUNY Poly 1 Hartwick 3

  • Location: Utica, N.Y. | Wildcat Field House

  • Records: SUNY Poly (6-9, 0-2 Empire 8) Hartwick (9-8, 2-0 Empire 8)

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Braelyn Hornick (Candor, N.Y.) played a stellar game for the Hawks, topping her game-high assist record from just last game with 49. To complement her, Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) would capitalize on the sets to bury 17 kills.

  • Malia Dake (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) would hold down the defensive end with 13 digs in four sets, surpassing 200 career digs. Meanwhile Samantha Garback (Tully, N.Y.) tallied a game-high 5 blocks.

  • The Hawks would hold an edge over the Wildcats in every statistical category, most notably a 70-33.5 advantage in points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats would grab the first point of the night off a Hawks service error, though the Royal Blue and White would answer back in grand fashion. They soon pulled ahead with a commanding 19-5 lead off consistent Wildcat attacking errors while Hornick orchestrated the offense. Isabella Gracias (Oneonta, N.Y.) was all over the court to keep the Hawks' momentum going, burying four successful kills in the first set. While SUNY Poly was able to make up for a few points, a kill from Hornick followed by consecutive errors gave the Hawks a solid 25-11 lead to take the first set.

Momentum only continued in the second set, with Sophia Palladino (Owego, N.Y.) securing the first kill. Swartz and Garback would quickly follow up with back-to-back attacks of their own off successful serves from Dake. Palladino and Swartz would combine for eight of the Hawks' fifteen kills in the second, while Palladino would also grab an ace to add to her stat sheet. Mary Kinnane (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) would also bury a service ace in the Hawks' second set crusade to help the Hawks pull away with a 25-12 set.

However, a late rally from the Wildcats spelled trouble for 'Wick in the third, as the SUNY Poly offense was ruthless. Trailing by as many as five points, the Hawks were in a precarious position, though Lucille Walker (Ithaca, N.Y.) would spark the offense with back-to-back kills and give Swartz the momentum to knot the teams at 15-15. Two more service aces from Kinnane would even bring the Hawks to a lead, though the Wildcats would come back with a vengeance to force a fourth set.

By the fourth, the Hawks were back in business as they slowly began to pull away with a steady lead, eventually earning the final twelve consecutive points to earn the 25-9 set and the 3-1 victory overall.
