HOW IT HAPPENED
The matchup marked the fourth meeting between the programs in the past two seasons, each encounter intensifying the rivalry since Geneseo joined the Empire 8. Last fall, the Hawks — then the No. 6 seed — stunned the Knights in a dramatic penalty shootout. This time, Geneseo managed to edge out the Blue and White in another defensive grind.
Hartwick generated the early pressure with corners in the 5th, 17th, and 18th minutes but was unable to capitalize. Geneseo answered with a spell of possession midway through the half, earning their first corner in the 22nd minute. Both backlines continued to frustrate each other's attacks, and the match entered halftime scoreless.
The Knights opened the second half on the front foot, testing goalkeeper Jelani Usim (Kingston, Jamaica) in the 57th minute before finally breaking through just two minutes later for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
The Hawks continued to battle, earning three more corners in the final 30 minutes while pushing for the equalizer. Mathieu Six (Antwerp, Belgium) came closest to leveling the score in the 81st minute, forcing a key save from the Knight keeper.
Despite a valiant effort, Hartwick's late push came up short as the Blue and White fell in a hard-fought quarterfinal, concluding their 2025 season.
