FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Hartwick women's swimming and diving program turned in one of its most complete showings of the season, earning a third-place finish among seven programs at Fredonia's Blue Devil Invite.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hartwick opened the Blue Devil Invite with a strong showing in the 200-yard freestyle relay, where Aubrey Vaile (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), Anna Bischoff (Oneonta, N.Y.), Kate Gucciardi (Cicero, N.Y.), and Cate Russo (San Pedro, Cal.) combined for a 1:43.12 finish, placing fourth and finishing just one second behind Saint Vincent. The Hawks added key points in the opening session as Dani DeCarlo (Whitesboro, N.Y.) claimed fourth in the 200-yard individual medley, and Vaile followed with a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Hartwick closed Day One with another fourth-place result in the 400-yard medley relay, as Cassidy Payrot (Cicero, N.Y.), Min-Syun Chen (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Vaile, and Russo stopped the clock at 4:10.21.
Entering Day Two in third place behind Penn State Behrend and Empire 8 rival Brockport, the Hawks continued to deliver consistent results. Payrot, Chen, Vaile, and Bischoff opened the session with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, recording a 1:52.99—just two-tenths behind Brockport. DeCarlo continued her strong weekend with a third-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (4:48.74). Hartwick then earned its first women's individual event win of the meet when Min-Syun Chen (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.24. The Hawks closed Day Two with a top-three finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as Russo, Gucciardi, Bischoff, and Katie Vieira (South Windsor, Conn.) combined for an 8:20.27, solidifying Hartwick's third-place standing heading into the final day.
The Hawks opened the final day with a podium finish from Russo, who placed third in the 1650-yard freestyle with an 18:20.40. Chen kept her dominant meet rolling, completing a breaststroke sweep by winning the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:27.31. On the boards, Annabelle Lindsay (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) delivered a strong performance with a runner-up finish in 3-meter diving, scoring 384.40.
Hartwick closed out the Blue Devil Invite with a third-place effort in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Vaile, Bischoff, Gucciardi, and Russo combined for a 3:47.15 to wrap up an impressive showing from the Blue and White.
