Women's Basketball Falls to Alfred on the Road

ALFRED, N.Y. - The Hartwick Women's Basketball team wrapped up their four game conference road trip, matching up with the Saxons in a physical affair, but ultimately fell to Alfred.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Hartwick 43 Alfred 59

  • Location: Alfred, N.Y.

  • Records: Hartwick (5-14, 3-8 Empire 8) Alfred (12-8, 6-5 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Hartwick opened the contest with Yadi Smith (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) spotting Macy Durkin (Syracuse, N.Y.) on the backdoor cut with Durkin converting the reverse layup.

  • The Hawks' offense was plagued with turnovers in the first quarter, allowing the Saxons to build a sizable lead.

  • Alfred shot well in the first quarter, posting their best quarter of the contest with 22 points but the Hawks were determined to execute their defensive gameplan down the stretch.

  • Bailey McCoy (Otego, N.Y.) sank the running floater over the taller defender to open up the second quarter, giving the team some momentum to build on.

  • The Royal Blue & White were able to keep the Saxons in check, only allowing 13 points in the second quarter, but the offense struggled to connect from the floor, headed into the half down by double digits.

  • Durkin ignited the offense to begin the second half, draining a step back three then connecting on a three point play on the ensuing possession with a tough step-through layup.

  • Hartwick began to click as Emma Cohen (Utica, N.Y.) connected on back to back jumpers from downtown to get the Hawks back within reach of the Saxon lead, drawing within seven.

  • Unfortunately, the offense would go dormant for the remainder of the third quarter, allowing Alfred to increase their lead once again.

  • Coach Lombard's squad did a good job drawing contact in the fourth and earning trips to the charity stripe.

  • The Hawks knocked down their free throws with great efficiency, but ran out of ample time to mount a comeback. Cohen led the team in scoring with ten points, Smith snagged seven rebounds for the team lead.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will head back to Lambros Arena to face off against the Utica Pioneers on Friday, February 7th at 5:30 PM.
