Hawks Fall to Golden Flyers in First Round of Empire 8 Championship

ROCHESTER, NY - The Hawks, having clinched the No. 5 seed in the Empire 8 Championships, traveled to Rochester, NY to take on the No. 4 seeded Nazareth Golden Flyers in the first round of postseason play, though they would be unable to secure a win.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Hartwick 5 Nazareth 15

  • Location: Rochester, NY

  • Records: Hartwick (8-8, 5-5 Empire 8) Nazareth (11-7, 7-3 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The afternoon game kicked off late after a rain and thunderstorm delay pushed the start time back by over an hour and a half.

  • After the storm passed, the Hawks would match up with the Golden Flyers, with Nazareth securing the first draw control and burying the first goal of the contest only about 30 seconds in.

  • The Golden Flyers were relentless in the first period, tallying up another 7 goals in the first in an effort to shut the Hawks out early.

  • 'Wick was able to gain some momentum in the second quarter, with Kara Anderson (Collingwood, Ont.) able to take advantage of a failed Nazareth clear and push the offense up the field. She would then score unassisted to put the Hawks on the board.

  • Anderson would then win the next draw control and pass the ball up to Katrina Marten (Middlesex, N.Y.), who would tally an assist on a stellar Hanna Goodreau (North Reading, Mass.) goal.

  • Nazareth would respond with two more goals to end the first half with an 8-goal lead.

  • The Royal Blue and White were unable to break through the Golden Flyers' defense and manage a goal in the third quarter, while Nazareth added another 4 to the scoreboard, one of them being man-up after a Hartwick green card.

  • Nazareth would add another goal to their total in the fourth before the Hawks put an end to their offensive crusade.

  • Lily Dempsey (Glenville, N.Y.) would soon pick up two consecutive goals, both assisted by Kristen Vaccarelli (Dix Hills, N.Y.)

  • In the final 30 seconds of the game, Vaccarelli would snag a goal of her own, assisted by Marten.

  • Though the Hawks fought hard, their late comeback would not be enough to down the Golden Flyers, and the Hawks would subsequently be eliminated from the Empire 8 Championship.

  • Brooke Lynett (Acton, Mass.) and Alexa Patrakis (Wilbraham, Mass.) were bright spots for the Hawks, tallying a combined 13 saves between the pipes. Lynett would end the season with 108 saves, and Patrakis would finish with 25.

  • Vaccarelli would end her senior season leading the team with 68 goals, 89 points, 50 ground balls and 75 draw controls. In addition to her season highs, Vaccarelli would also be credited with breaking the Empire 8 All-Time Career Goals record, cementing the new record at 228.

  • Marten would end her season with 54 assists, the most on the team, and maintain her records of single-season assist leader, career assist leader, and single-game assist leader.

  • Brianna Liebro (Castleton, N.Y.) would rank first on the team with 64 caused turnovers, and appear as first in NCAA Division III for caused turnovers per game. Liebro would also rank second on the team with 36 ground balls and 70 draw controls this season.

  • Parker Laurin (Wilton, N.Y.) would also stand out this year, tallying an impressive 25 goals as a first year.
