HOW IT HAPPENED

The defending Empire 8 Champions opened their 2025-26 campaign with a home matchup against the Red Dragons, having previously defeated them 7-0 in their spring meeting.

Vanuga and Lantzy set the tone early on the No. 2 doubles court, cruising to a 6-1 victory over Oneonta's Plue and Rufrano and coming off the courts first. While the two teams battled at No. 1 doubles, the Hawks secured the doubles point thanks to a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot from the pairing of Maggie Van Valkenburgh (Highland, N.Y.) and Maddi Morrison (Burnt Hills, N.Y.).

Phoebe Olson (Jamestown, N.Dak.) and Gianna Leggieri (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) wrapped up doubles play with a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 spot, overcoming some early resistance from Oneonta's Peck and Cripe.

Coach Butcher's squad kept their foot on the gas in singles play. Leggieri quickly took care of business at the No. 5 spot, conceding just one game. Van Valkenburgh followed suit at No. 4, matching Leggieri's scoreline to make it three straight points for the Hawks.

After dominating the first set 6-0, Vanuga's opponent found some rhythm in the second—but Vanuga quickly shut the door with a 6-2 win to give the Hawks their fourth point. Morrison clinched the match at No. 6 singles with a commanding 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Samantha Lantzy impressed in her debut at No. 1 singles, defeating Peck 6-2, 6-2. Olson capped off the sweep with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, securing a 7-0 victory for the Hawks.
