HOW IT HAPPENED

The infamous Battle of the Hills rivalry between SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College continued on a beautiful day at All College Field where the two field hockey teams would face off for the first time in regular season play this year. After a 0-1 loss last year and a recent preseason scrimmage that left the two teams deadlocked at a 1-1 score, 'Wick hoped to put a win on the board and widen the Hawks' lead in the Battle of the Hills.

It would be the Red Dragons to strike first, however, off a quick goal during the first penalty corner of the game. The Hawks would soon answer back with only seven seconds left in the first quarter with a penalty corner goal of their own; Junior defender Katelyn Klotz would knot the game going into the second quarter off a stellar insert from sophomore Kayla Kinkel (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.).

The next quarter opened with back-to-back penalty corners taken by Caroline Aspuru (Farmingville, N.Y.), though the Red Dragons would rally their offense to push up the field for two more goals before the second half.

The third period saw an incredible offensive drive for the Hawks, with Hope Angioletti (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) snagging an assist off another Klotz goal, once again scored off of a penalty corner. Both teams fought hard on both ends of the field to close out the game, with Hartwick's defense standing out by shutting down nine more Oneonta penalty corners, three of which were back-to-back. Despite the intensity from the Hawks ramping up in the second half, the drive was not enough to overcome the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons in this Battle of the Hills game.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will travel to Saratoga Springs, New York to take on the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds on Saturday, September 13th, at 1 PM.
