HOW IT HAPPENED
Back on Wright Stadium turf after a hard-fought contest with RPI, Hartwick field hockey took on nationally ranked Rochester in a defensive showdown that came down to the wire.
The Yellowjackets applied early pressure, earning three penalty corners in the opening two minutes, but Ava Reynolds (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) and the Hawks' back line stood tall, turning away two shots. Hartwick nearly struck first midway through the frame when Hope Angioletti (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) sliced through the Rochester defense and set up Lexi Cheeseman (Owego, N.Y.) for the best look of the quarter, but her shot was denied by the Yellowjackets' keeper.
The second quarter saw Rochester continue its attack, posting five consecutive corners, but the Hawks' defense—anchored by Kendal Woolley (Blue Point, N.Y.)—refused to break, sending the match to halftime scoreless.
Hartwick seized the momentum in the third, earning three corners and finally breaking through when Woolley pounced on a loose ball in front of the cage to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead with nine minutes left in the quarter. The advantage was short-lived, as a Hawk yellow card opened the door for Rochester to equalize on a rebound after an initial stop by Reynolds.
The fourth quarter featured more stellar defending from Katelyn Klotz (South Glens Falls, N.Y.), including a huge block on a corner attempt to keep the game tied. However, the Yellowjackets capitalized on another corner with under seven minutes remaining to take the lead. Hartwick had a golden chance in the final seconds but couldn't convert, falling 2-1despite a gritty effort against a top-25 opponent.

The Hawks will head to SUNY Oneonta for a Battle of the Hills matchup on Wednesday, September 10 at 4PM.
