Field Hockey Drops 3-1 Conference Match to Geneseo

ONEONTA, N.Y. –The Hartwick College field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to SUNY Geneseo Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The Hawks and Knights played to a scoreless draw through the first half before Geneseo scored twice in the third quarter and added another goal in the fourth.

Senior Hope Angioletti (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) provided Hartwick's lone goal of the afternoon, scoring early in the third quarter to briefly even the score at 1-1. Angioletti finished with a team-high seven shots, including four on goal. Hartwick recorded 13 shots overall, with six finding the target.

Junior Ava Reynolds (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) made 11 saves in goal for Hartwick, including four in the opening quarter and three more in both the third and fourth quarters.

Hartwick finished with a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners, while Geneseo held an 18-13 edge in shots and a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal. The loss moves Hartwick to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while Geneseo improves to 7-3 and 3-0 in league action. The Hawks are next in action on Wednesday, Oct. 7 in a road conference matchup with Elmira.

After Geneseo came out strong in the first, Hartwick controlled much of the second quarter offensively, earning four penalty corners and putting three shots toward the Geneseo goal. Neither team was able to get a score, however, in the first half, leading to the 0-0 halftime score.

The Hawks continued to pressure in the third quarter, but Geneseo opened the scoring at 32:24 with Ella Greico's ninth goal of the season. Angioletti answered just 1:29 later to make it 1-1, getting a shot just inside the shooting circle to go unassisted.

The Knights responded less than a minute later, as Ava Harman scored unassisted, giving Geneseo the lead for good at 34:56 in the third quarter. They added an insurance goal at the 50:52 mark of the fourth quarter to make it 3-1, as Harman collected her second goal of the game.

Reynolds kept Hartwick within striking distance with three saves in the final quarter, but the Hawks were unable to find the back of the cage, leading to the 3-1 E8 loss.
