ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Hartwick College field hockey team cruised to an 8-0 Empire 8 victory over Elmira College Wednesday night at Elmira's Campus Field. The Hawks scored twice in the opening quarter, added two more goals in the second, and continued to pull away in the second half with four more goals.
Junior
Makayla Bales (Sidney, N.Y./Sidney) notched two goals for Hartwick, while seniors
Katelyn Klotz (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) and
Hope Angioletti (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) each added two goals as well. Seniors
Dani Hand (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and
Kylie Krawiec (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) each scored as the Hawks matched their season-high with eight goals. Junior
Kendal Woolley (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport Blue Point) and Klotz had two assists, while
Molly Schoenfeldt (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) added an assist as well.
Senior
Ava Reynolds (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) made four saves in the first 30 minutes to earn the win, while sophomore
Cassie Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) played the final 30 minutes to help secure the combined shutout.
Hartwick dominated offensively, finishing with a 31-6 advantage in shots and a 25-4 edge in shots on goal. The Hawks also earned 14 penalty corners compared to five for Elmira.
With the victory, Hartwick improves to 6-4 and 4-1 in Empire 8 play, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 3-7 and 2-3 in league play. The Hawks are next in action on Saturday, Oct. 10, when they travel to Houghton for another road conference matchup.
Hartwick opened the scoring at the 7:13 mark when Hand finished a play set up by Klotz on the team's fourth corner of the night. Klotz doubled the advantage less than three minutes later, scoring on a redirection from a Schoenfeldt shot from the top of the shooting circle. Bales added a goal early in the second quarter off a nice feed from Woolley before Klotz scored her second of the night at 24:05 off an assist from Woolley as well, giving Hartwick a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Bales added her second goal at 40:56 in the third quarter, extending the lead to 5-0, as she showed off some impressive dribbling to bring the ball from near midfield all the way to the goal. Hartwick then erupted for three goals in the final six minutes, with Angioletti scoring twice before Krawiec capped the scoring at 57:59 with her third goal of the season.
