HOW IT HAPPENED
Following their first match, the Hawks still had some work to do. Their next game of the day was against Regis College, who put up a fight against the battling Hawks. Coming into the first,
Ethan McCaw (Ilion, NY) and
Pedro Martins (São Paulo, Brazil) combined for 4 evenly split kills. Regis' performance from behind the service line helped give Hartwick an edge, keeping the momentum in a tug of war between both teams. After going point for point the whole way, a Regis kill and Hartwick error helped conclude the set in a 25-21 loss.
In a nail-biting second set, Hartwick forced Regis to 30 points, coming up just short in the latter. Hartwick saw action from all across the net, tallying 11 total kills. Ruggiero led the set with 4 kills of his own, Doherty trailing just behind him with 3, also notching a solo block. The last five points of the set were essential, the game going beyond the traditional set-point. Ramirez banked a kill to bring the Hawks up 26-25, but Regis fought hard to come back. A block from Regis concluded the set, stealing the energy heading into the third.
Hartwick dropped the third set 15-25, only managing 5 kills against the opposing Rangers. Regis went on an early run, the Blue and White falling behind 9-3 early in the set. Hartwick pushed to come back but ultimately fell short at the end.
