HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks looked to get back on track as they traveled north to face an undefeated Potsdam squad in frigid conditions.
Liam McManus (Skillman, N.J.) opened the scoring for Hartwick, converting on a feed from Colby Simonetti (Pittsford, N.Y.). The Bears responded just over a minute later before both defenses settled in, limiting opportunities as each offense struggled to generate consistent looks.
Potsdam broke the deadlock with a go-ahead goal at the 2:42 mark, but Spencer Hogaboom (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) ensured the Hawks would head into the second quarter even, finding the back of the net with just eight seconds remaining to tie the game.
The Bears opened the second quarter with a man-up goal just over a minute into the frame, their second extra-man tally of the day. Colin August (Garrison, N.Y.) responded for the Hawks, finishing off a pass from Hogaboom to even the score at three.
Potsdam then seized momentum, putting together an eight-goal run that stretched through the remainder of the second quarter and into the third. Ty Crowley (Wallkill, N.Y.) finally halted the Bears' surge, scoring with 26 seconds left in the third quarter off an assist from Harry Rubin (Portland, Me.).
Hartwick mounted a push in the fourth quarter, scoring four goals to Potsdam's one. Ryan Nevins (Warwick, N.Y.) assisted Colin August on two fourth-quarter tallies, helping August secure his fourth hat trick of the season. McManus added his second goal of the afternoon, while Simonetti netted the final Hartwick goal with just under five minutes remaining.
Despite the late push, Potsdam's extended scoring run proved too much to overcome as the Hawks ran out of time in their comeback attempt, falling to the Bears by a score of 12-8.
