HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks geared up for their fourth consecutive road game, marking their second Empire 8 contest away from home in their first-ever flag football matchup against SUNY Brockport.
Hartwick opened the contest with possession, compiling a three-play, 66-yard drive capped off by a 22-yard sprint from Heaven Levere (Liverpool, NY) to take a 6-0 lead. The Golden Eagles answered swiftly, also taking just three plays to travel 66 yards and converting the extra point for a one-point cushion. The two defenses then exchanged stops before the Hawk offense struck again, led by Audra Doll (Greene, NY). Doll broke loose for a 48-yard run to give Hartwick a 12-7 advantage.
The hosts mirrored the Hawks' success with a big play of their own, regaining the one-point edge before adding another score to close out the first quarter, leaving Hartwick trailing 19-12.
Defense dominated the second quarter, with Brockport responsible for the lone score after converting the one-point try. The Hawk offense worked to generate momentum but struggled against the Golden Eagle defense. The Blue and White kept Brockport off the board for much of the quarter while also preventing further damage despite extended time on defense.
Trailing by 13 to begin the second half, Brockport extended its advantage with a score on the opening possession. Hartwick's offense continued to stall, being held scoreless for the second consecutive quarter, while Brockport added another touchdown, finding success on the ground.
Hartwick broke the drought midway through the fourth quarter as Kendra Charland (Albany, NY) found Anne Stanavich (Amsterdam, NY) on the run for an eight-yard score, cutting into the Golden Eagle lead. However, the Hawks did not have enough time to mount a comeback, falling in their first matchup with Brockport, with one more meeting scheduled for the end of April.
Ellie Kalbach (Spring City, Pa.) was active on the defensive end, posting 11 flag pulls, including a tackle for loss. Ziyon Harrison (Clay, NY) was a force up front, piling up two sacks, while Reese Malfettone (Holtsville, NY) was active in the backfield, collecting two tackles for loss. Charland led the pass defense with three pass breakups, Lexi Cheeseman (Owego, N.Y.) added two pass disruptions, and Bailey McCoy (Otego, N.Y.) continued to be a defensive threat, tallying one pass breakup.
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
The Hawks will prepare for a short turnaround, facing SUNY Geneseo in a conference rematch at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11.
