ROCHESTER, NY – Hartwick Field Hockey battled through a scoreless first half, before two second-half goals lifted the opposing Yellowjackets to a 2-0 decision at Fauver Stadium.
The Hawks came out with pressure early, recording five shots in the opening quarter.
Lexi Cheeseman (Owego, N.Y.) and
Makayla Bales (Sidney, N.Y.) each put shots on target, but Hartwick was unable to break through.
Ava Reynolds (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) kept the game scoreless in the cage, making six saves in the opening 15 minutes.
Hartwick continued to create opportunities in the second quarter, adding two more shots and earning a penalty corner. Reynolds added another save to send the Hawks into halftime, the score even at 0-0.
Rochester finally found the back of the cage midway through the third quarter, taking a 1-0 lead in the 45
th minute. Hartwick continued to fight for an equalizer, with Bales putting a shot toward goal that was stopped by a defensive save. A second goal came early in the fourth quarter, extending the deficit to 2-0.
The Hawks continued to push, earning three penalty corners in the final 15 minutes, but couldn't convert any of their late opportunities. Reynolds finished the afternoon with 12 saves, keeping Wick within striking distance throughout the contest. The Hawks recorded nine shots, including five on goal, with Cheeseman and Bales each finishing with two shots on target.a
