TROY, NY – Hartwick Field Hockey opened their season in a resilient match against RPI this afternoon, answering RPI's leads throughout the first three quarters, before ultimately falling 7-4 at Harkness Field.
RPI opened the scoring just two minutes into the contest, the Blue and White responding immediately.
Dani Hand (Queensbury, N.Y.) put the Hawks on the board off of a penalty corner from
Kayla Kinkel (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), evening the score 1-1. The Engineers regained the advantage early in the second quarter, but Kinkel answered in the nineteenth minute with an unassisted goal to level Hartwick once again.
RPI took its first two goal lead of the afternoon, but the Hawks continued to fight back.
Hope Angioletti (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) converted a penalty corner from
Molly Schoenfeldt (Vestal, N.Y.) in the twenty-eight minute, sending the game into half with Hartwick trailing by just one goal at 4-3.
The Engineers extended their lead early in the third quarter, Angioletti responding again with her second goal of the day to make it 4-4; marking the Hawks' third equalizer of the afternoon. RPI pulled away with three unanswered goals, but Hartwick continued to pressure the Engineers late, earning four penalty corners in the fourth quarter.
Hope Angioletti led the Hawks with two goals and six shots, while
Kayla Kinkel added a goal and an assist. Hartwick finished with 15 shots and 14 penalty corners, while junior
Ava Reynolds (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) held the Hawks down defensively with nine saves in goal.
