ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick Men's Soccer came up just short in their first Mayor's Cup match, falling to King's College 2-1 at Elmore Field.
The Hawks created the first opportunity of the afternoon when
Devin Chandler (Wylie, Tx.) put a shot on goal in the opening minutes, ultimately being saved by the Monarch keeper. Chandler later added another attempt as Hartwick looked to apply pressure early.
King's broke through in the 23
rd minute with a goal in the first half, adding a second in the 37
th to send themselves into a halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
Hartwick came out of halftime with a much stronger attack, putting 13 shots toward the goal compared to King's one.
Wilson Mount (Atlanta, Ga.) cut the deficit in half in the 65
th minute, finishing off the assist from
Nick Nowak (Shoreham, N.Y.) - marking his second goal of the season.
The Hawks continued to pressure King's throughout the bottom half, earning three corner kicks. Mount finished with five shots and two on goal, while
Benji Griffiths (St. Andrew, Jamaica) added two shots of his own on frame.
Hartwick finished with 17 shots overall, including six on goal. Freshman keeper
Jake Bernier (Gettysburg, Pa.) made his collegiate debut with two saves in goal for the Hawks.
The Hawks will be back tomorrow for their second game of the weekend, playing Hood at home for another Mayor's Cup Matchup.
