Tammy Sousa begins her 11th season as Hartwick College's head equestrian coach in 2021-22. She has over 35 years of riding experience and over 20 years of instructing experience.

In 2016-17, Sousa helped sophomore Rachel Kowalczyk to the Cacchione Cup title for the High Point Rider of the Year in Zone II Region III. Kowalczyk competed at the IHSA National Show, finishing seventh overall against 37 of the nation's best.

In 2014, Sousa helped guide junior Julia Ready to the IHSA National Show. Ready was just the fourth Hartwick rider in program to qualify for the national event.

Sousa, who served as assistant coach with the Hawks' equestrian team for 13 years, currently is the manager of Hunters Rein Stables in Otego, NY, overseeing the facility and its operations.

Sousa teaches hunter/jumper and equitation riding, coaching clients at open competitions. She is also an adjunct lecturer at Hartwick. Sousa has also trained the Chensego Hunter Association Open Equitation Champion rider.

Sousa earned a bachelor's degree in Equine Studies from Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, VA in 1998. She was a a competitor on the International Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Teams in 1998, 2000, and 2001.

Sousa is a member of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), the United States Hunter/Jumper Association (USHJA), and the Chenango Hunter Association, Inc.
