Hawks Fall Short at RPI 1-0

TROY, NY - Hartwick's women's soccer team dropped a close 1-0 decision to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday night in Troy, NY. The Engineers scored six minutes into the contest and hung on for the win. RPI's record now stands at 5-11-1. Hartwick is 4-10.

RPI scored the game's only goal 5:55 into the opening half of play as Shannon Maguire scored her first of the season off an assist from Briana Bet. The Engineers nearly made it 2-0 less than 10 minutes later when Nicole Goodsell's shot hit the post.

The Engineers led 'Wick 6-3 in shots in the first 40 minutes of play until the Hawks turned up the pressure in the final five minutes, taking two corners and out-shooting RPI 5-0 in the span. Krista Marzano (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) took three of the Hawk shots with one forcing a save from RPI goalkeeper Melissa Pinsonneault. Katelyn Bosy (Scotia, NYScotia-Glenville) also had a shot to close the half that was blocked by Pinsonneault.

The Hawks, who have not scored for over 421 minutes of action, were unlucky in the second half not to tie the score. Freshmen Emily Thorndike (Dover, MA/Dover Sherborn) and Mackenzie Shipley (Sedro Woolley, WA/Sedro Woolley) each rang shots of the woodwork in the second session. Thorndike's header 10 minutes into the half deflected off the post. Shipley had her shot bounce off the post with just two and a half minutes remaining in regulation in the Hawks' last chance of the match.

The Engineers finished with 15 shots to the Hawks' 13. Hartwick held a 7-2 edge in corners over the 90 minutes of action. Hartwick keeper Alyssa Rondo (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) made nine saves in the game, including seven in the second half. Pinsonneault made three stops for RPI.

Hartwick is back in action on Saturday at Alfred in the final game of the season. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
