ALFRED, NY - A goal from freshman Emily Thorndike (Dover, MA/Dover Sherborn) 6:22 into the match held up as the Hartwick women's soccer team downed Alfred on the road 1-0. The Hawks close out the 2009 season with a 5-10 overall mark. The Hawks also finish the Empire 8 season with a 4-4 record in fifth place. It is the Hawks' best showing in the conference since 2002 when the squad earned a 4-3 mark.
Hartwick was dominant in the second half of play as it took 13 of the half's 14 shots. The Hawks also held a 4-0 edge in corners as they continually went forward into the attacking third. Alfred goalkeeper Shanna Ewoldt kept the game a 1-0 affair stopping seven on the night.
Sophomore Katelyn Bosy (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) took four shots, including three on target, to lead Hartwick. Thorndike, Briana Crow (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville), and Lauren Ploof (Hammond, NY/Hammond) each took three shots for the Hawks.
'Wick goalkeeper Alyssa Rondo (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) was called upon to make just one save on the night on a Carly Schrader shot to earn the win. Rondo also picked up her first career shutout.
The game was the final one in the careers of seniors Ploof and back Marissa Mackay (Stillwater, NY/Stillwater).
Alfred ends the year 5-9-3 overall and winless in the Empire at 0-8.
