Crow's Overtime Goal Leads Hartwick to 2-1 Victory Over Utica in Empire 8 Opener

UTICA, NY - Junior forward Briana Crow (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) scored less than five minutes into the first overtime period to lead Hartwick past Utica College 2-1 on Wednesday night at Charles Gaetano Stadium in Utica. The goal is Crow's first of the year and gives 'Wick a victory in its Empire 8 Conference opener. It also evens the team's overall record at 2-2.

Crow settled a throw-in in the box and converted the game-winning goal from six yards away at 4:56 of the first extra period to secure the win. Hawk goalkeeper Alyssa Rondo (Saco, ME/Thornton Acad.) made five saves to record her first career win in goal.

Utica got the ball rolling quickly in the match as Jill Benoit followed up a rebound and chipped the ball over Rondo from 15 yards away less than nine minutes from the opening whistle for a 1-0 Pioneer lead. Hartwick got right back into the match 3:53 later when a Pioneer defender headed the ball into her own net on attempted clearance to knot the score at 1-1.

After two goals in the opening 13 minutes of action, it appeared a high-scoring match was in store. Both teams' defenses would tighten up, however, and the game would remain goalless for the next 82 minutes.

The Pioneers doubled up the Hawks in shot attempts in the first half with a 6-3 edge. All three Hartwick efforts came from freshman striker MacKenzie Shipley (Sedro Woolley, WA/Sedro Woolley).

In the second half, both teams took seven shots with none getting past either Rondo or Utica keeper Monique Schneeberger. Utica had one opportunity in the extra session with Michelle Rooney putting a shot wide of the target before Crow capitalized for the winners.

The Hawks are off until a Sept. 22nd showdown with local rival Oneonta State at Elmore Field beginning at 7 p.m.
