SCHENECTADY, NY - Hartwick College (3-9) finished up play at the Union Tournament with a 1-3 record following a 3-2 heartbreaking loss to Hunter and a 3-0 loss to Russell Sage on Saturday.
'Wick lost the first two sets of the match against Hunter 25-21 and 25-7. With their backs against the wall, the Hawks came back to edge their opponents 26-24 in the third set and rolled 25-12 in the fourth set to force a fifth and final frame to decide the victors. In the final set, it was the Hawks of Hunter, however, that would dig deep and gut the victory out, 15-9.
Sophomore Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) and Darcy Dolge (LaGrande, OR/LaGrande) combined for 23 kills in the match for Hartwick. Dolge would end up just two digs shy of a triple-double with 10 kills, 13 assists and eight digs. Tori Beck (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) equaled a career-best with 22 digs. Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) contributed 17 digs, and seven kills and Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) notched 16 assists.
Mausert added another nine kills and a team-high 13 digs to lead 'Wick in a straight set loss to Sage. Final scores were 25-13, 25-15, 25-15. Beck added 11 digs and Dolge led in the assist category with 10.
Hartwick hosts the Empire 8 Crossover Tournament next weekend from Friday, Sept. 25th to Sunday, Sept. 27th. The Hawks will play RIT, Elmira, Alfred and Stevens over the course of the weekend.
