ONEONTA, NY - The Hartwick volleyball squad earned its first Empire 8 win of the season with a three sets to one win over Alfred and lost its final match of the weekend to Stevens in three sets. The Hawks close the weekend with a 1-3 record.
Hartwick split the first two sets in the opening match with the Saxons. 'Wick took set number one 25-22 only to have Alfred come right back to take the second frame 25-20. The Hawks shook off the Saxons winning the next two sets 25-20 and 25-22 to improve to 1-2 in conference play.
Senior Darcy Dolge (LaGrande, OR/LaGrande) missed a triple-double by just one dig. She tied a match-high with 12 kills, recorded 11 assists and nine digs, and also hit .385. Sophomore Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) contributed nine kills offensively. Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) also had nine kills and contributed 12 digs. Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor/Walter Panas) led Hartwick with 19 assists and Tori Beck (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) had 14 digs.
Tara Quigley led Alfred with 12 kills. Janelle Brandow added 11 and Emily Crosby netted 10.
In Hartwick's second match, Ducks Maggie Kowalska and Maggie Majcher each recorded 10 kills and Sara Budar notched 33 assists as Stevens won in three straight, 25-15, 25-20, 25-15.
Mausert's five kills was a team-high. She also collected 11 digs. Beck added 12 digs and Desmond registered six blocks.
The Hawks will complete Empire 8 play later in October at Nazareth with matches against the Golden Flyers, Ithaca, St. John Fisher, and Utica. 'Wick next competes at the Oneonta State Tournament next Friday and Saturday night.
