ONEONTA, NY - After coming away empty for the last five seasons, the Hartwick women's soccer team captured its first Brozman Memorial Cup with a 3-2 overtime victory over Marywood Saturday at Elmore Field. Junior midfielder Katelyn Bosy (Scotia, NY/St. Francis Univ.) broke a 2-2 deadlock 5:31 into the first overtime session as she took a pass from Erin McSherry (Cortland, NY/Cortland) near the right sideline and hooked a shot over Pacer goalkeeper Meghan Coyle. The victory for Hartwick ends Marywood's two-year hold on the cup, which is named for former 'Wick player Erinn K. Brozman who passed away in 1993 shortly after graduating.
The Hawks led 2-0 at the end of the first half but the Pacers scored twice in the second session with a Stephanie Hoffman shot with 16 seconds left in regulation to tying the score. Hoffman found herself all alone at the top of the 18-yard box with time ticking down. Hartwick keeper Kelly Griffin (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia) got a piece of Hoffman's shot but was unable to keep it out of the net. Siobahn Blancaflor put in Marywood's first goal in the 58th minute off a rebound.
Hartwick got off to a quick start registering a goal in the opening 11 minutes of the match. Junior Briana Crow (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) ripped a shot from 15 yards out that was deflected back to senior defender Marissa Mackay (Stillwater, NY/Stillwater), who one-timed a shot back at goal from just inside the 18 that found the side-netting. It was Mackay's first goal in a Hartwick uniform. Just under six minutes before the half, sophomore Krista Marzano (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) and senior Lauren Ploof (Hammond, NY/Hammond) connected to put the Hawks up 2-0. Ploof brought the ball into the box and instead of taking the shot herself, she slipped a nice pass to the on-rushing Marzano, who tucked the ball into the goal for her second career tally.
Hartwick finished the match with a slight 13-11 edge in shots. The Hawks held a 7-2 advantage over the Pacers in the first 45 minutes with Marywood returning the favor 8-3 in the second half.
Coyle made six saves, including two in overtime. Griffin also ended the contest with six stops.
The Hawks are back in action next Saturday against Rowan in their opening match of the Mayor's Cup at Elmore Field beginning at 4 p.m. Marywood next plays Delaware Valley also on Sept. 12.
