Wick Swimming and Diving Teams Down St. Lawrence

ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick's men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept St. Lawrence on Saturday at Moyer Pool for the first head to head victories of 2010 for both programs. The 'Wick women improve to 6-5 with a 137-84 win over the Saints. The Hawk men improve to 8-3 with a 136-70 showing.

The women's team cruised to victory with wins in all 13 events on the day. Seniors Erin Gray (Gardner, MA), Brittany Sherburn (Franconia, NH), and sophomores Sam McFarland (Derry, PA), Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA), Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL) each were first in a pair of events for the Hawks. Gray took the 500 free (5:37.18) and 1000 free (11:03.04), with Sherburn capturing top honors in the diving events with scores of 196.55 (1-meter) and 198.35 (3-meter). McFarland was first in the 200 free (12:03.06) and 100 free (56.94), Ha won the 400 IM (4:52.47) and 100 fly (1:00.56), and Smith scored wins in the 50 free (26.20) and 100 backstroke (1:04.17).

Grace Enchermann (Pittsford, NY) had a first-place effort in the 100 breaststroke and both 'Wick relay teams were winners on the day. Erin Holladay (Everett, WA) was edged out by McFarland in the 200 free by just under two seconds and by 1.46 seconds by Gray in the 500 free for a pair of seconds.

Freshman Kenny Kleso (Milford, PA) led the Hartwick men with three individual wins and he combined for another in a relay victory. Kleso took the 1000 free (10:14.33), 500 free (4:59.95), 100 breaststroke (1:01.25) and teamed with William MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, NY), Eric Goble (Bellefontaine, OH), and Kaird Durocher (Bethlehem, PA) for a 200 medley relay victory. Goble also won the 100 fly (55.62) and Durocher earned firsts in the 100 free (50.17) and 50 free (22.69).

Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) was tops in the 200 freestyle and 400 IM, and Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY) was first in both diving events. Cody Cupit (Nacogdoches, TX), Lydon Schultz (Mount Pleasant, SC), James Sanders (Sharon, MA), and MacElveen closed out the meet with a win in the 200 free relay.

The Hartwick teams will hit the road the next two weekends. The Hawks travel to Nazareth on January 24th and to Fredonia State on January 30th for quad-meets with a trio of SUNYAC foes in the host Blue Devils, Oneonta, and Cortland.
