Hartwick Swimming and Diving Teams Fall to Springfield and Union

ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick's swimming and diving teams kicked off the 2010 year with a home tri-meets against visiting Springfield and Union on Saturday at Moyer Pool. The Hartwick men fell to Union 134-103 and Springfield 150-93. The 'Wick women came up short against the Dutchwomen 141-99 and the Pride 158-83.

The Hartwick men, which now hold a 7-3 record in head to head competitions this season, were paced by Michael Phillips (Austin, TX). The sophomore earned a trio of victories on the day in the 200 freestyle (1:45.86), 200 individual medley (1:58.91), and the 200 breaststroke events (2:12.11). Phillips has now recorded first-place efforts in 15 different races this season.

Eric Goble (Bellefontaine, OH) also registered first for the Hawks in the 200 butterfly events with a time of 2:02.59. Goble edged out teammates Chris Willcox (Dresher, PA) and Connor Dwyer (Barrington, RI). All three finished within two seconds of each other with Willcox touching the wall in 2:04.05 and Dwyer finishing less than a second later in 2:04.94. Willcox also turned in a second-place finish in the 200 IM (2:03.56) behind Phillips.

Kenny Kleso (Milford, PA) recorded a pair of seconds for Hartwick at the meet. He was 2nd in both the 1000 free (10:21.58) and the 500 free (4:57.19) races. Diver Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY) was second in both 1-meter (222.15) and 3-meter (219.35) events, and Lydon Schultz (Mt. Pleasant, SC) was second in the 100 freestyle (50.28).

Senior Erin Gray (Gardner, MA) secured two firsts in the distance events to lead the 'Wick women's squad. Gray swam to an 11:13.42 time in the 1000 free and earned a time of 5:31.90 in the 500 event.

Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL) earned the other individual first for Hartwick in the 200 backstroke. She finished the race with a time of 2:16.34. Smith also combined with Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA), Whitney Fletcher (Superior, CO), and Kristen Grunert (Oakland, CA) to earn top billing in the 400 medley relay (4:10.35).

Ha also took 2nd in the 200 IM (2:16.49) and 3rd in the 100 freestyle (56.77) on the afternoon. Fletcher took 2nd in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.66) and Mallory Weber (Naperville, IL) was 2nd in the 200 fly (2:26.50). Diver Brittany Sherburn (Franconia, NH) placed second in both 1-meter (183.90) and 3-meter (193.35) competitions.

Hartwick returns to Moyer Pool next weekend when both men's and women's teams host St. Lawrence University on January 16th.
