ROCHESTER, NY - Nazareth College (9-5, 6-0 E8) posted a late goal in the first half and added two late goals in the second half to register a 3-0 victory over Hartwick, this afternoon in Empire 8 conference women's soccer.
The Hawks looked like they would make it into halftime deadlocked at 0-0 with the first-place Golden Flyers. However, the Flyers opened up the scoring with just 19 seconds to go before the intermission as Katie Wyant scored on a header that went over Hawk's goalie Alyssa Rondo (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy).
The game remained a 1-0 affair until the 78th minute when Naz picked up an insurance marker. Rachel Piemonte took advantage of a penalty kick after a Hartwick infraction in the box to give the Golden Flyers some extra cushion.
With four minutes left in the game, Anne Czelusniak dribbled around a Hartwick defender to create enough space to fire a shot past Rondo to close out the scoring.
Nazareth out-shot Hartwick 21-6 for the match. Junior Julie Kessler (Canton, CT/Canton), sophomore Emily Thorndike (Dover, MA/Dover Sherborn), and freshman Jessica Bentley (Worcester, NY/Schenevus) each had shots on target for the Hawks.
Rondo made eight saves in net for the Hawks. Hillary Simon gathered three saves for the shutout.
Hartwick, which falls to 5-6-2 overall, 2-2-2 in the Empire 8, travels to Ithaca College next Wednesday, October 20th at 4 p.m.
