Ithaca, RIT Defeat Volleyball at Empire 8 Crossover

ITHACA, NY - The Hartwick College volleyball team lost a pair of matches at the second of two Empire 8 Crossovers on Friday in Ithaca, NY. The Hawks dropped their first match to the host Bombers in three sets, 25-15-25-20, 25-13, and dropped a three-setter to RIT, 25-15, 25-17, 25-17. The Hawks are 1-5 with two matches remaining on the conference docket tomorrow.

Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) led Hartwick offensively with eight kills in 16 attacks against IC. Desmond went errorless to hit.500 in the match. She added team-highs of three blocks and two service aces. Junior Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) notched a team-best nine digs and sophomore Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) contributed 12 assists.

Ithaca's Chelsea Hayes registered 14 kills and eight digs. Jessica Hoeffner added nine kills and Marissa Woodcome and Sydney Folk combined for 33 assists.

RIT held 'Wick to just 15 kills in the Hawks' second match. Freshman Katie Ryan (Circleville, NY/Pine Bush) had five kills with Desmond and freshman Kelly Spengel (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) adding four each. Freshman Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist) picked up 11 digs and Mausert contributed eight.

'Wick plays St. John Fisher tomorrow at noon before wrapping up the E8 schedule against Alfred at 2:30 p.m.
