Hawks Close Out Empire 8 Campaign at Ithaca

ITHACA, NY - Hartwick College finished up its Empire 8 schedule on Saturday at Ithaca College with a pair of losses to St. John Fisher and Alfred. The Hawks fell in three sets to the Cardinals, 25-12, 26-24, 25-15 and dropped a five-setter to the Saxons, 24-26, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 12-15. 'Wick ends the E8 season with a 1-7 mark.

Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) led Hartwick with eight kills against Fisher. Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and Kelly Spengel (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) each contributed five kills. Freshman Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist) registered a team-high 13 digs with Mausert pitching in with 10. Sophomore Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) contributed 10 assists.

The Cardinals received 11 kills from Becca Smith. Sydney Kandefer and Rachel Kline each had eight. Amy Street doled out 30 assists and notched 10 digs.

Desmond, Mausert, and Sprengel were the big producers for the Hawks against Alfred. Desmond earned a match-high 16 kills while Mausert and Sprengel added nine apiece. Rebecca Donahoe (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) chipped in with eight kills. Vitale led the 'Wick defense with 16 digs. Mausert notched 13 digs and Sprengel had 11. Britney Lintner (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) recorded 21 assists in the match with McGee 18. Desmond had a match-high six blocks.

The Saxons were led by Chelsea Hall's 15 kills. The Saxons recorded 99 digs in the match with six players in double figures.

Hartwick (6-24) next plays on Tuesday, October 26th. The Hawks travel to Clinton, NY for a match with Hamilton College at 7 p.m.
