ONEONTA, NY --Hartwick fell to its neighbor Oneonta State 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-13) in the Oneonta-Hartwick Presidents' Match tonight at O-State's Dewar Arena. Both Dr. Margaret L. Drugovich of Hartwick and Dr. Kleniewski of Oneonta participated in the opening coin flip to begin the match.
The first two sets were fiercely contested with neither team able to gain more than a four-point lead. The Hawks held leads in each set with the Red Dragons coming away with victories. In the third set, Oneonta led 9-7 before pulling away to a 25-13 win to close out the match.
Junior Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) led Hartwick with five kills. Freshman Katie Ryan (Circleville, NY/Pine Bush) added four. Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist) recorded 10 of the Hawks' 27 digs on the day. Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) and freshman Britney Lintner (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) each contributed nine assists.
Oneonta was led in the match by sophomore Kacy Boburka who had 12 kills. She also had six digs and two blocks. Senior Kelsey Klopfer had 15 assists and nine digs. Classmate Megan Boeltz registered a team high five blocks to go with five kills.
The Hawks are back in action tomorrow at Oneonta State's Dig Pink event. 'Wick opposes the Sage Colleges at 11 a.m. and CCNY at 1:30 p.m.
