Women's Soccer Falls to Hamilton to Close 2010 Season

ONEONTA, NY - Visiting Hamilton scored twice in an 8:15 span in the second half to defeat Hartwick's women's soccer team 2-0 on Saturday at Elmore Field. Senior Lauren Farver scored the game-winner and notched an assist on the Continentals' second tally. Hamilton, the seventh ranked team in the east region, improves its overall record to 9-2-3. The Hawks end the season 6-9-2.

The Hawks and Continentals played through a scoreless first half with the visitors holding an 8-3 edge in shots. Hamilton's best opportunity came five minutes into the game when senior Anne Gravely slipped into the box and ripped a shot off the post. Hartwick keeper Kelly Griffin (Wynantskill, NY/Troy) smothered the ball to eliminate a second chance for the Continentals.

Gravely had another good chance for Hamilton in the 64th minute of the game but her near-post header from six yards away went just wide of the left post. The Continentals broke through less than a minute later as Farver collected a loose ball at the corner of the Hawks' 18-yard box and sent her shot over Griffin's head to the far corner for a 1-0 lead.

Farver set up the insurance goal just over eight minutes later as she sent a deep cross to the far post. Alex Rimmer was alone on the goal line to head in the Continentals' second tally.

Junior Alexandra Luke (Eagle Bride, NY/Hoosick Falls) had 'Wick's best chance of the second half in the 81st minute. Luke fought through a Continental defender deep in the Hamilton box and fired a shot from a difficult angle on goal only to have keeper Liza Gergenti make one of her four saves on the day.

Griffin would end the match with six saves in her final match with the Hawks. The game was also the last in the careers of seniors Briana Crow (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville), Erin McSherry (Cortland, NY/Cortland), and Kate Wigg (Underhill, VT/Mount Mansfield), and Kate Bosy (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville).
