Swimming and Diving Teams Earn Split With Alfred on Senior Day

ONEONTA, NY - The Hartwick women picked up a win but the men fell short against visiting Alfred University on Saturday at Moyer Pool. The Hawk women's team rolled to a 161-109 triumph over the Saxons while the 'Wick men dropped a 175-125 decision to the three-time defending Empire 8 champs. The meet also served as the "Senior Recognition/Parent Appreciation Meet" with 'Wick seniors Erin Gray (Gardner, MA), Erin Fleming (Northampton, MA), and Brittany Sherburn (Franconia, NH) competing in the final home meets of their careers with the program.

The 'Wick women cruised to victory over their E8 counterparts winning all 14 races on the day. Sophomore Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA) was the high point scorer for Hartwick accumulating 29.75 points while finishing first in four individual races and one relay. She won the 100 freestyle clocking in at 55.89 seconds, and she earned firsts as an exhibition entry in the 100 backstroke (1:01.86), 100 butterfly (59.54), and 200 individual medley (2:14.86) events. Ha was also part of the 200 medley relay team, along with Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL), Whitney Fletcher (Superior, CO), and Kristen Grunert (Oakland, CA), which set the Moyer Pool record with a time of 1:52.45.

Gray picked up a pair of wins in her home finale in the distance freestyle events. She won the 1000 free in 11:13.27 and took the 500 free as an exhibition entry in 5:28.06. Gray remains unbeaten in the two events in her last three outings.

Fletcher earned an NCAA "B" cut time in the 100 breaststroke and missed the pool record by just .11 seconds with a time of 1:07.37. She also was first in the 200 breast (2:27.83). Smith was first in the 50 freestyle (25.67), Katie Holmes (Cotuit, MA) was tops in the 200 back (2:22.51), Mallory Weber (Naperville, IL) took top honors in the 200 fly (2:22.38), and Sam McFarland (Derry, PA) won the 200 free event (2:02.30).

In her final home meet, Fleming teamed with McFarland, Holmes, and Erin Holladay (Everett, WA) for a 200 free relay win. She was also 3rd in the 500 free, 1000 free and 100 breast, and 4th in the 200 free. Sherburn was second in both diving events, coming up just 0.55 points short of Alfred's Kylie Smith in the 3-meter event.

Freshman Chris Willcox (Dresher, PA) and sophomore Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) paced the Hartwick men with 22.75 and 20.75 points, respectively, on the day. Both student-athletes finished with a pair of wins for the Hawks. Willcox was clocked at 2:03.06 in the 200 fly and 2:06.20 in the IM. Phillips was first in both the 200 free (1:45.73) and 100 breast (1:01.49). The sophomore has been beaten just one time all season in the 200 free event.

Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY) took top billing in the 3-meter diving event accumulating 252.35 points. He also finished second in the 1-meter competition (221.65).

Phillips, Willcox, Eric Goble (Bellefontaine, OH), and Lydon Schultz (Mount Pleasant, SC) won the 200 medley relay event to start the afternoon. The quartet earned a time of 1:39.82. Schultz also placed second in the 50 free (22.51) and 100 free (49.76), and Goble was second in the 100 back (56.58) and 200 back (2:03.63).

The women's team, which closes out dual-meet competition with a 9-7 mark, next competes at the UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Championships in two weeks at Nottingham High School in Syracuse from Feb. 17-20. The 'Wick men (11-5) compete at the same event at the same location the following week from Feb. 25-28.
