Women’s Lax Rally Falls Short at Elmira

ELMIRA, NY – A late rally for Hartwick's women's lacrosse team came up just short on Saturday at Elmira College as the Hawks were defeated 18-14. The Hawks trailed 16-8 with 14 minutes to play but rattled off six unanswered goals in a seven-minute span to pull within two with under five minutes left. Two late Soaring Eagles goals, however, sealed the win for EC.
Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) powered the Hartwick offense with a game- and career-best six goals. Emily Walsh (Cortland, NY/Cortland) and Emily Piedigrossi (Cortland, NY/Cortland) tallied two apiece.
LaVaute and Piedigrossi each scored twice with Jen Lin (Albany, NY/Colonie) and Erica Scicchitano (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) scoring once each in the first half of play, but the Hawks trailed by an 11-6 margin. Elmira's Lindsay Mitchell, who finished the game with four goals, netted three in the first 30 minutes for EC.
Three goals in the opening 14 minutes pushed the Soaring Eagles lead to eight. 'Wick and Elmira then traded two goals each over the next minute with Walsh and LaVaute tallying for the Hawks. Trailing 16-8, the Hawks slowly chipped away at the EC lead over the next seven minutes.
Tiffanie Bishop (Shoreham, VT/Middlebury) started the run and LaVaute added another score 2:29 later. With under 10 minutes to go, Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon) scored on a free-position shot and only 42 seconds later, Walsh made it 16-12 with her second tally of the day.
LaVaute got her fifth of the afternoon with just over six minutes left, and 1:10 later she tallied her 20th of the season to bring Hartwick to within two goals, 16-14. In the surge, Hartwick outshot the Soaring Eagles by an 8-1 margin and won five draws.
Elmira closed the door on the Hartwick comeback hopes in the final three minutes as Meghan Pass and Emma Schepers registered unassisted goals.
LaVaute and Bishop grabbed three draws each for Hartwick to lead the team. LaVaute and Kennedy notched three ground balls apiece. Goalie Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) made 11 saves for 'Wick.
Sarah Ware secured 12 draw controls for EC. Jordan Donegan, Marki Michaels, and Emily Zimmerman scored three goals each and Mary Kate Gellerman made eight saves.
Hartwick plays at Ithaca tomorrow at 1 p.m.
