Early Deficit Sinks Hawks

ROCHESTER, NY – An early hole was too much to overcome for the Hartwick College women's lacrosse team on Friday against Nazareth as the Golden Flyers earned a 21-9 win. Sophomore Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles), the Hawks' leading scorer, paced Hartwick with three goals. The Hawks slip to 1-9 on the year. Nazareth improves to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
Naz came out flying in the early going scoring eight goals in the first seven minutes of action. The Hawks responded over the final 23 minutes of the half, outscoring the Golden Flyers by a 4-3 margin. LaVaute, Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran), Erica Scicchitano (Centerport, NY/Harborfields), and Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon) scored goals in the first half to close the gap to 11-4 at halftime.
In the second half, Naz scored four of the first five goals in the opening seven minutes to gain a 15-5 lead, but Jen Lin (Albany, NY/Colonie) registered her third goal of the year and LaVaute netted her third of the day to pull the Hawks to within eight. The Golden Flyers would net the next four goals to put the game away.
Emily Walsh (Cortland, NY/Cortland) and Ryan McGovern (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) each scored the final two Hartwick goals in the final seven and a half minutes.
Kristine Olijnyk, Erinn Wood, and Nora Davis combined for 10 goals to lead Nazareth. Olijnyk scored four times with Wood and Davis each contributing three scores.
Nazareth held a 39-25 edge in shots for the day. The Flyers also had a 20-16 edge in ground balls. Hartwick earned 16 draws to Naz's 15.
Goalie Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland), who finished the match with a season-high 14 saves, nabbed a game-high five ground balls for the Hawks. Jess Kenna (Mastic Beach/William Floyd) added three. McGovern and LaVaute recorded three draw controls apiece.
