Utica Slips Past Women’s Lax 12-11

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick's women's lacrosse team came up a goal short on Friday, 12-11, against Utica in the Empire 8 opener for both teams. The Hawks led 6-4 at halftime but the Pioneers outscored 'Wick by an 8-5 margin in the second half to gain the victory. The win for the Pioneers improves their overall record to 3-2. The Hawks fall to 1-4.
Freshman Erica Scicchitano (Centerport, NY/Harbor Fields) led Hartwick with a career-best five goals. Sophomore Emily Walsh (Cortland, NY/Cortland) added three tallies and classmate Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) contributed a pair of goals.
The Pioneers received four goals from junior Tammy Kohanski, three from sophomore Katlyn Banker, and two goals and two assists from junior Julianne Schultheiss.
The Hawks outshot UC by a 4-2 count in the opening four and a half minutes of action with neither team producing a goal. Banker broke the tie at 25:28 with her first and Kohanski extended the lead to two less than three minutes later.
'Wick quickly turned the tables on the visitors as LaVaute, Scicchitano, and Walsh each tallied in a 37-second span to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Hawks. Banker answered for the Pioneers and Schultheiss gave her team the lead 4-3 at the midway point of the half.
The Hawks would then go on a 3-0 run in the final 12 minutes of the opening stanza with Walsh tying the score at 4-4 and Tiffanie Bishop (Shoreham, VT/Middlebury) and Scicchitano closing out the scoring in the final four minutes.
In the second half, Utica would score five of the first six goals in the opening 10 minutes to retake the lead from Hartwick 9-7. Scicchitano got the lone Hartwick tally as UC goalie Shelby Barbay turned away five of six Hawk shots in the run.
Scicchitano cut it to 9-8 with nine minutes left, but two Utica tallies upped the advantage to 11-8 with only 4:54 showing on the clock. The Hawks inched closer as Scicchitano and Walsh each beat Barbay in a 45-second span to make it an 11-10 game with 3:44 to play.
Schultheiss gave UC some breathing room with 2:10 left before LaVaute pulled 'Wick to within one with 17 ticks left. The Pioneers fortunately won the ensuing draw and ran out the clock to secure the win.
Utica finished the game with a slim 32-29 edge in shots. The Hawks secured 16 ground balls to the Pioneers' 10 and won 13 of 25 draws for the match.
Barbay ended the contest with 12 saves. Hartwick keeper Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) equaled a season-high with nine stops.
Scicchitano also added game-highs of four ground balls and four draws for Hartwick. LaVaute and Lindsey Zweigenhaft (Islip, NY/Islip) each recorded three ground balls and Bishop earned three draws. The Hawks, as a team, caused 11 Utica turnovers with eight players earning at least one.
Hartwick wastes little time getting back to Wright Stadium. The Hawks look for Empire 8 win number one host tomorrow as they host Alfred University at 1 p.m.
