Alfred Outlasts Hartwick Women’s Lacrosse Team

ONEONTA, NY – Tracie McGinnity's goal with 1:07 left in the second overtime period was the difference as Alfred downed Hartwick's women's lax team 14-13 at Wright Stadium Saturday. The Hawks battled back from a four-goal second-half deficit to take the lead with under nine minutes and forced overtime with a goal with 37 seconds left. Hartwick drops to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the Empire 8 after its second straight heartbreaker in two days. AU improves to 4-2 and 1-1 in the conference.
In the first extra session, Alfred took the only two shots with 'Wick goalie Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) making one save to keep the game level. In the second three-minute period, McGinnity finally broke through from Erin Tobin to give the Saxons the lead with 67 seconds to play. After a 'Wick turnover with 20 seconds left it looked as if Alfred would clear and escape with the win. Emily Piedigrossi (Cortland, NY/Cortland),however,came up with a ground ball at midfield with 10 ticks to go and the ball worked its way in front of the cage to Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) whose last second effort was stopped by Alfred keeper Kate Baughman.
Sophomore Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon) scored four second-half goals to lead Hartwick, including the game-tying goal with only 37 seconds left in regulation. Classmate Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) added three scores and three assists, and Doyle and freshman Erica Scicchitano (Centerport, NY/Harbor Fields) each scored two.
The Saxons separated themselves from the Hawks with three straight goals in a four and a half minute span to take a 5-2 lead in the opening half of play. Two LaVaute tallies narrowed the gap to one with 13 minutes left and the game remained 5-4 until the final two minutes of the half. Tobin tallied with 1:19 to play and Doyle scored from a feed from Kennedy 39 seconds later to close the half with Alfred leading 6-5..
Alfred opened up its biggest lead early in the second half with three goals in the opening six minutes for a 9-5 edge. The Hawks dug deep and battled back to cut the lead to one as LaVaute, Kennedy, and Jen Lin (Albany, NY/Albany) each scored within two minutes and 28 seconds to make the score 9-8. Lin's tally was also the first of her career.
The Saxons again pushed the lead back to three, 11-8, after Elyse Caldwell and Ali Garcia found the cage, but four straight Hartwick tallies gave 'Wick its first lead since the 25:16 mark of the first half. Scicchitano scored on a free-position shot, Kennedy scored twice with LaVaute earning assists, and Doyle scored from Piedigrossi with 8:54 left for a 12-11 Hawk edge.
Thirty-two seconds after 'Wick grabbed the advantage, Michelle Adams tied it and gave AU the lead less than a minute later. Hartwick took four shots in the final seven minutes with Baughman making three saves until Kennedy's individual effort sent the game to overtime with under a minute to go.
Baughman finished the game with 14 saves. Kaye made nine saves for the third straight contest. Hartwick ended the match with a 33-29 edge in shots. The Hawks also won 19 of 31 draws on the day. The Saxons held a 21-18 advantage in ground balls.
