Hawks Fall to #10 Stevens

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick's women's lax team dropped a 19-9 decision to nationally 10th ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday at Wright Stadium. The Hawks trailed 9-5 in the first half of play but the Ducks pulled away late in the first half. The nine tallies for Hartwick is the most goals conceded by Stevens in the conference play this season. With the setback, the Hawks fall to 1-6. The Ducks are 8-1 and 3-0 in the E8.
Hartwick received two goals each from sophomores Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles), Emily Walsh (Cortland, NY/Cortland), Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon), and freshman Erica Scicchitano (Centerport, NY/Harborfields). Junior Tiffanie Bishop (Shoreham, VT/Middlebury) added one goal and LaVaute and sophomore Emily Piedigrossi (Cortland, NY/Cortland) each dished out one assist.             Stevens was paced by senior Alyssa Pigott who scored six times and added an assist. Spencer Waybright added four tallies and Zeah Wasserman dished out five assists.
The Ducks jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the first seven minutes of the contest. Hartwick countered with a pair of tallies within 20 seconds of each other from Kennedy and Scicchitano. After Stevens got two back, LaVaute and Walsh both found the net in a four-minute span to make it a 9-5 game with 11:42 remaining.
Two quick tallies from the Ducks made the score 11-5 and the game remained a six-goal affair for close to seven minutes. Stevens would tack on another three scores in final three minutes of the half to extend the advantage.
In the second half, the Ducks got three of the next four goals in the first 15 minutes. Walsh netted the Hawk tally in the span at the 21:17 mark. LaVaute then tallied from Piedigrossi, and Scicchitano netted an unassisted goal for Hartwick 49 seconds apart. Kennedy closed out the Hartwick scoring with 46 seconds on the clock.
The Ducks held a 37-16 edge in shots and a 13-10 advantage in ground balls. The Ducks also won 21 of 30 draws in the contest led by Christine Smith's 12.
Junior defender Bianca Gianfrate (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) registered a game-high four ground balls for 'Wick. Scicchitano, Piedigrossi, and freshman Ryan McGovern (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) each recorded two draws, and Jess Kenna (Mastic Beach, NY/William Floyd) tied for a game-best two caused turnovers.
Hartwick returns to Empire 8 play this weekend with a pair of road games. On Saturday, the Hawks face the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College. Last season, the Purple and Gold escaped with a 13-12 overtime win against the Hawks to close the season. Ithaca College hosts the Hawks on Sunday.
