Hawks Split at Union; Defeat Sage 3-1

SCHENECTADY, NY - Hartwick College's volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Union College Invitational on Friday night falling to the host Dutchwomen 3-1 and defeating the Sage Colleges 3-1. The Hawks are now 3-7 on the season.

Hartwick took the opening set of its first match 25-17 only to have its hosts come back to take the next three 25-22, 25-20, 25-20. Junior Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson), and Kelly Sprengel (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) combined for 32 kills to lead the Hawks. Mausert led the way with 13 kills and added she added six digs. Desmond notched 10 kills and six blocks, and Sprengel added nine kills. Freshman Britney Lintner (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) registered 29 assists and contributed a team-high nine digs.

In the nightcap, 'Wick took the first two sets 25-14 and 25-8 from the Gators. Sage came back to take set number three 25-17 but the Hawks would prevail in the fourth set 27-25 for their third win of the year. Sprengel led Hartwick with 10 kills. Mausert and Desmond each had nine kills. Mausert tied for a team-best 11 digs and Desmond recorded three blocks. Lintner registered a double-double with 31 assists and 11 digs, Mickey Coons (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) added eight digs and Katie Ryan (Circleville, NY/Pine Bush) notched six kills.

Hartwick wraps up play at the Union Invitational tomorrow against Skidmore and Vassar.
